Columbus vs. Smithville

The Cardinals are coming off a great win against La Grange and are looking to keep their momentum and Playoff hopes alive with another win against the Smithville Tigers.

First Quarter

The Cardinals looked pumped and ready for action to start the game.  Tonight was the last home game for all Seniors. They introduced each Senior before the game.  Just a little extra incentive to play good.  Smithville struck on their first drive with a 5 yard TD run to go up 7-0.  The Cardinals answered right back with a 1 yard TD by Pflughaupt.  The Cardinals defense played tough and stopped the Tigers on their next drive.  That led to another 1 yard TD run by Pflughaupt to put the Cards up 14-7.  The quarter would end with the Cardinals up 14-7

Second Quarter

The defenses on both sides played a lot tougher in the second quarter.  Thru the first 7 minutes of the second quarter neither team scored.  Columbus struck first in the second quarter with a 1 yard TD run by Bubak.  The score was Columbus up 21-7 with only 3:18 left in the half.  Unfortunately Smithville’s offense was clicking and the Cardinals Defense could not stop them from scoring.  With less than minute left in the first half the Tigers scored on a 30 yard TD pass to cut into the Cardinals lead.  Going into Half Time the Columbus was up 21-14.  The Cardinals Offense and Defense were looking great.  Hurd had a big first half interception they helped stop the Tigers driving in Cardinals Territory.

Third Quarter

It was very important for the Cardinals to get something going on offense coming out of Half Time after they let the Tigers score at the end of the first half.  That is exactly what the Cardinals did.  Less than 2 minutes into the third quarter the Cardinals scored on 45 yard TD pass from Pflughaupt.  A big chunk of those yards came from after the catch.  Geisler used his speed and vision to score his first TD of the season.  10:28 remaining in the third, the Cardinals were up 28-14.  It seemed the Defense fed off the Offenses momentum.  They came up with another big stop.  The Cardinals struck again with 6:37 left in the third on a 32 yard TD run by Evans.  Once Evans got past the line no one was going to catch him.  Cardinals were now up 34-14.  Smithville scored with 1:02 left in the third to cut back into the lead.  At the end of the third, the Cardinals were up 34-21.

Fourth Quarter

As long as the offense played smart and the defense stayed aggressive the Cardinals would come away with their second district game of the year.  The Cardinals struck quick in the fourth on a 20 yard TD pass from Pflughaut to Evans to put the Cardinals up 41-21 with only 10:04 remaining in the game.  The Tigers showed some fight striking quickly on a 38 yard TD pass to make it a 2 score game.  9:44 remaining in the fourth, the Cardinals were up 41-28.  The Cardinals offense played smart and the defense played great to close the game out.  Estrada had a big interception to stop any momentum the Tigers may have had.  Cardinals won the game 41-28.

Nothing better than having your last home game as a Cardinals be a win. With this win the Cardinals control their own destiny.  They are currently 2-2 in district play.  A win next week against Giddings would get them in the Playoffs.  It is always good when you control the fate of your season.  The Cardinals play Giddings in Giddings on Friday, November 4 @ 7:30.
